Travel itinerary
Check in and freshen up. Central George Town — most spots are walkable. Complimentary nutmeg juice on arrival. 4.8 stars.
Calm cafe run by the Tzu Chi Foundation. Organic drinks, good tea. Perfect to decompress after the flight before the evening eats.
Opens 4:30pm sharp. Go early or expect a queue. Order the CKT — skip the fried rice. Duck egg and cockles recommended. Cooked over real charcoal.
Authentic Peranakan dinner. Tables fill before they open — arrive early if no reservation. Nasi Ulam, Otah, Cincalok Pork are standouts. +60 14-741 9839
Opens 7am. Go early — sells out by mid-morning. RM3 a plate. The sambal is potent. Order rice + sambal first before adding extras.
Hike up takes 2–2.5 hrs. Steep stairs + jungle trekking. Bring water, wear proper shoes. Mostly shaded. Go before 10am to beat the heat. Views over George Town at the top are spectacular.
Take the funicular back down — only 4 minutes. Pre-book express tickets at penanghill.gov.my to skip the queue. The ride itself is worth experiencing.
Air-conditioned — a relief after the hike. Order the assam version. Generous fish-to-noodle ratio. The asam laksa mojito is a fun novelty worth trying.
French-Asian pastry shop. The almond croissant and canelé are outstanding. Cosy spot to sit for an hour after the hike. Piccolo coffee is solid.
4.8 stars. Best Nyonya food in Penang by most accounts. Assam Pedas Stingray, Nyonya Kari Bak Kut, blue pea fragrant rice. Don't be late — time-limited seating. +60 12-854 8799
About 30 min by Grab from George Town. Long sandy stretch. Water sports available (parasailing, jet skis). Sunsets here are excellent — consider returning in the evening.
Opens at 3pm. Worth the Grab ride to Jelutong (~15 min). One of the best assam laksa in Penang — balanced tartness. The uncle running the stall is very friendly.
Affordable linen and cotton pieces. Good starting point for Beach Street shopping. More accessible price point than Warehouse 129 next door.
Premium linen pieces around RM200. Beautiful fabrics — worth browsing even if you don't buy. Higher-end sibling of Sixth Sense, same block.
Bold graphic prints, high-quality fabrics. Very different aesthetic to the other two — more statement pieces. A few doors down on the same street.
Rich prawn broth — add roast pork. Lor mee and oyster omelette also good. Grab a table first, then order. Queue moves fast once you're in.
Last Penang breakfast. Goes fast — be there early. RM3 a plate. One final hit of that sambal before the flight home.
Grab a croissant or canelé for the road. Pick up a box to take back to Singapore — they hold up well for the flight.
